What's New in Nuptials Now
Though weddings are life-changing events that are steeped in traditions, it’s amazing how they have evolved through the decades, changing along with shifting economics, politics and societal attitudes. The year ahead will be no different. Expect new twists on old ways and the introduction of fresh ideas. Here’s a look into the future.

It’s the return of the ‘80s. The latest designs in wedding dresses have tapped into a retro ‘80s vibe on the fashion runways. Think Madonna in her Like A Virgin days. Fingerless lace gloves are the new “it” accessory for brides who want their ensembles to have an edge.
A modern bride’s choice of wedding dress colour is undergoing a makeover, too. White is always right, but now so are non-traditional choices, like black, red, and creamy pastel shades of blue, mint and rose. The design can have southern charm with ultra-feminine touches like lace, ruffles and peek-a-boo necklines. Or it can tap into Bohemian chic with a dress that has oodles of long layers (like peticoats or crinolins) or using crushed, wrinkled fabrics. To complete the look, shoes are chunky and necklaces are worn long and in multiples. And with wedding fashions breaking the rules, watch for hemlines to be all over the map, including micro minis for the bride who doesn’t want to cover up a gorgeous pair of legs.
For brides who want to wear the latest from big-name designers, there’s good news, celebrated wedding dress designers have introduced spin-off collections that are kinder on the wallet. Venezuelan-born designer Angel Sanchez (who dressed Eva Longoria and Sandra Bullock on their wedding days) launched Angel by Angel Sanchez, with gowns priced from $2,000 to $3,000.
Fine dining
Receptions today are a reflection of the times. They’re more casual, less formal, and incorporate elements of fun. Take wedding cakes, for example. Some brides have nixed the in favour of beautifully decorated cupcakes, placed in decorative tiered towers that are truly eye catching. Cupcakes are also a convenient option, with no cutting or formal serving required. Instead of a sit-down dinner, couples have opted for multiple sample stations where guests can nibble and mingle around the room. Tasting bars now appear at receptions. They can feature a single food type, like cheese or chocolate, or they may highlight more exotic fare like sushi. The late-night buffets that fuels the late-night and dancing set have lightened up. While they are still heavy on comfort food, the portion sizes have shrunk with trays of mini pizzas and four-bite burgers. And don’t think that dinner is your only option. With everyone’s schedules overloaded these days, more wedding ceremonies are being held in the morning, followed by an elegant champagne brunch.
Variations on a theme
It’s important to couples to have a wedding that is unique and reflects their personality. While wedding ceremonies remain traditional, receptions offer a chance for twosomes to do something to make them stand out from other brides and grooms. Theme weddings are becoming popular and give guests a glimpse into the couple’s interests or hobbies. Western, medieval and Victorian themes add to the celebratory mood of a reception.
Another popular theme is ‘Sex & the City’ weddings; held at chic New York City locations like the penthouse rooftop of the Tribeca, or the Empire State Building. Carrie would be proud.
Grand adventures
It’s no secret that destination weddings have become enormously popular. The latest twist is to hold them in unexpected places. A resort spa can be a terrific choice since you can book it for the day, pamper yourself and members of your wedding party, and have privacy too. Spas have lovely settings that are ideal for photographs too, with private pools, lush greenery, and waterfalls. Luxury game reserves in South Africa and Kenya also offer memorable settings for ceremonies and receptions. Imagine the photos with the warm red glow of an African sunset as background. Heavenly!
Repeat performances
Couples are now using vacations as opportunities to renew their vows. Keep in mind that many resorts extend extra perks (like room upgrades and in-room treats like fruit baskets and sparkling wine) to those guests. Plus you have the services of an on-site wedding coordinator at your disposal, so you can avoid the stress and just enjoy the experience, while someone else takes care of the details. Taking the time to celebrate your love again by renewing your vows is a trend that really warms the heart.
