Bermuda

westjet_gettingthere

A pink sand paradise, splendidly secluded and utterly unique. That’s Bermuda!  With no neon signs, a limited number of cars and its strict environmental laws, Bermuda has an ambiance of purity and calm like no other place in the world.

Bermuda, composed of 180 islands linked by bridges, is divided into nine distinct parishes and has a population of approximately 65,000 people.  It’s 23 miles long and only 1.75 miles at its’ maximum width.  On the east side you’ll find the town of St. George, Bermuda’s former capital until 1815 when it was relocated to Hamilton.  It’s the oldest English-speaking colonial town still in existence and a World Heritage site. The town is steeped in history and the narrow streets such as Barber’s Alley and Aunt Peggy’s Land just add to the charm.  _St_George_HarbourIts’ historic buildings now function as houses, restaurants, pubs and shops and in the town Centre, King’s Square, look for the dunking stool that was once used to dump gossiping women into the harbor.

The capital is Hamilton, the centre of Bermuda’s activity and the transportation hub as both bus and ferry terminals are located here._Hamilton  It’s one of the smallest capital cities in the world and can easily be explored by foot in a couple of hours.  Beautiful pastel-painted Victorian buildings stand along Front Street, Hamilton’s main drag that overlooks magnificent Hamilton Harbour.  On Wednesday evenings in summer the street is closed to traffic for ‘Harbour Nights’; a weekly evening festival featuring craft and food stalls, _Johnny_Barnesperformers and late-night shopping.

While in Hamilton, stop and say ‘hello’ to Johnny Barnes, Bermuda’s most famous celebrity.  Every morning, Johnny stands for five hours at the Crow Lane roundabout waving to commuters as they head into the city. A life-size bronze statue was recently erected in honour of the man also known as ‘Mr. Feelgood’ and ‘Happy Man’. His portrait adorns Hamilton's Visitor Service Bureau, and even Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has honoured him.

The Royal Navy Dockyard is on the west side, on the tip of Ireland Island. _DockyardsBack in 1809 it was considered the largest British Naval facility outside the UK but is now transformed into a shopping village for both the locals and tourists.  Look for Bermudian art, local culinary feasts and lots of retail shopping.

A couple of other ‘must sees’ while visiting Bermuda are the ‘Crystal Caves’ - incredible crystal stalactites and stalagmites surrounding a clear lake of 55 feet deep and ‘Paget Marsh’ – a unique and unspoiled 25 acre nature reserve located minutes from downtown Hamilton.
